For decades the received wisdom even among researchers studying #sexualViolence was that assault of men by women was extremely rare, though maybe men were sometimes assaulted by other men.
Eventually, when researchers started actually asking the questions (and probably when the stigma about male victims of abuse reduced just slightly), a different picture emerged. In my memory this was somewhere between 2005 and 2015:
A lot of men get sexually assaulted. We're not talking about "minor" assaults (go ahead and make the case that there is such a thing or that it can be defined by an outside observer); these are psychologically or physically traumatizing assaults including rape.
