I've decided to delete this Mastodon account and will do so next time I log in.
But I realised that the folks whose company has been a pleasure in my time here might wrongly think they've upset me. You haven't. And I also have no issue at all with the running of my Mastodon instance.
Instead, my realisation is that what I would like to use social media for is not possible, given what enough other people here want to use it for, and how they want to do that.
