I am going to try to put together a separate relay for paid https://nostr.wine users similar to nostr.band that lets you subscribe with your pubkey and get events from public relays for everyone you follow, everyone they follow, and other relevant events.

This way you could subscribe only to a few paid relays + this custom feed and have good coverage of topics and replies that are not necessarily on your paid relays. Most of the public relay benefits without (most) of the spam because you use your own web of interest.
