One of videogamedunkey's worst takes was about Rockstar car/horse dialogue. It would be one thing if his point was that the Rockstar single-player format (get in conversation, start driving, long unskippable dialogue, get to destination) was repetitive and formulaic but his take was the dialogue was incongruous with the characters' personalities, I think. Like he says "why do these career criminals turn into social butterflies when they get behind a wheel?", but I mean why wouldn't they be. He talked about it like it's unnatural but if it's two people behind a wheel they do usually get into a lengthy discussion.
But the whole point if feels he's either missing or just ignoring is that it's meant to be downtime for the characters and allows them to speak their mind and reflect on the events around them and their views. And it almost always is some of the best dialogue. In shines in the Red Dead games because it's subverting your image of cowboys as these lawless amoral criminals, because they talk about their memories and their philosophies on the world. You can say it's unrealistic for cowboys in Red Dead or cynical mercenaries like Max Payne or Niko Bellic to be so eloquent and well spoken, but I disagree and think it adds so much nuance to their character.
