Seems like one trap you're describing, not two.
Objectively, I don't think Trump withstood the retaliation, although he held out longer than anyone in history ever has of course. But even now, he's settling for half measures, such as the incomprehensibly stupid decision not to post on Twitter again because whomever runs Truth Social is paying him not too. This is ultimately what did him in: too many half measures.
I don't know how I feel about the "Carlson is a plant" theory. I ultimately can't verify it one way or the other so it's an academic exercise. I do think it's fair to note his show was more "our show" with his writers' influence than Tucker is himself off the cuff. And certainly, whether Tucker truly feels this way or not (all indications are he does), the "I'm going to tell political candidates who want to represent white people to fuck off" thing was retarded and infantile. We desperately need sober minded people, preferably those with power, who can seize the moment, understand the stakes, and act accordingly. We don't have time for these stupid ideological handicaps.
Unfortunately, everyone with money and a megaphone seems incapable of doing so, so we stumble forward rudderless on this crazy train. The thesis was after they took out Trump, you'd eventually get someone "really" in the Hitler mold, or at least far more to the Right. I don't think that happens without real economic pain and collapse. Guess we'll see.
