One of the things you hear often on new alt social media is "wow, everyone is so nice here. this is so much better than -insert mainstream social media platform-"
That's because most of the userbase is an ideological ingroup.
Once the network starts to grow and has its first "Eternal September" moment, you encounter much more ideological diversity, and with that, the discomfort of cognitive dissonance.
I've yet to use any social media (distributed or otherwise) that is resilient to this effect.
It's really hard to create town-square style social media that truly embodies "freedom" and still feels good to use.
