I like to use big mac prices as the measure for inflation. Ultimately inflation is a decline in purchasing power, so any significant consumer item can be a good proxy for it.
That said, things have gotten more expensive beside inflation. But it's not just price gouging. It's also the whole industrial decline of the past few decades.
