npub1pakn3ynfq68jyq4gr404tmk6939vu3kmrl7qeafyayzpnsxuvegqhujkzf (npub1pak…jkzf) I was all in on what I consider the precursor to the current Fediverse, Diaspora, back in 2011 or so. I ran a public pod for around a year and learned a lot about collective human behavior and the practical and technological challenges of operating a distributed social network.
The tragedy and subsequent creator abandonment (stated factually and non-judgementally) of the early community saddened and disillusioned me for the better part of a decade. I appreciated the concept, but it seemed fraught.
In 2020, I began really paying attention to Mastodon and learning that the ecosystem had developed to the point where I could build something targeting the underlying protocols (ActivityPub and Webfinger) that could make an impact. I've been active in the current Fediverse since then and expect that I will continue to be for the foreseeable future.
