But these days, everybody is doing their own hustle, so each writer wants each reader to pay. If I paid to subscribe to each Substack or Medium site I wanted to read, I would quickly be impoverished. It is a colossally dumb system, but is not because writers are greedy. It is because publishing is broken.",
