There's too much emphasis in that story on, "don't pull the fire alarm just for kicks" and not enough on, "if you really think we're in danger, pull that fire alarm. You won't get in trouble if you were really scared."
In other news... wait, so when your alarm goes off, it's the POLICE who come?
But you pay ADT for the alarm?
That's wild. I have an alarm through a private security company, and when it goes off, it's the private security company's armed response personnel that respond. The whole reason we have alarms is because the police are inefficient and corrupt and cannot be trusted.
Oh, the security company will come a million times in a month if necessary. Because that's what we pay them for.
The way it works here is, your alarm goes off, and the control room calls you within no more than a minute (in my experience it's 20 seconds or less). If you don't answer, they come guns blazing.
If you DO answer, they ask for your safe word. If you say anything other than your actual safe word, they say, "Thank you very much, sir/ma'am, have a good day/night/morning/evening!" they put down the phone, and they come silently and stealthily, guns drawn.
If you say the correct safe word, then it means it was an accidental activation, and they say, "Thank you very much, have a good day/night/morning/evening!" and that's the end of it.
