Typically, I’d be fuming that Save Thine Kingdom is absolute garbage.

But as it happens, I was playing this while watching the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election coverage. And you know what? This might actually be the perfect trashy, low stakes experience to interact high-stakes democracy in action – and I say this with no assumption that there will ever be another Presidential election again.

In Save Thing Kingdom, you are a king tasked with fighting evil hordes. But the thing is, your character is terrible at fighting. So you do what any self-respecting monarch would: trick your poor subjects into doing the fighting for you.

I don’t know if this was by design, but this is how the game works.

And if you can’t find loyal subjects who will fight for you, take the coward’s way out. Stand behind a fence and swing at enemies who can’t touch you. It’s just how the game… works.

The graphics? A hideous lovechild of low-poly Minecraft and stock assets.

The sound? Awful. The music grates, the effects are actively unpleasant, and the voice acting is a crime.

The controls? They’re technically functional but feel like wading through molasses in lead boots. And why, you ask, did I buy this Well, I wishlisted it, and it went on sale. Thought it was going to be a good time. Turns out, it’s bad in ways that defy description.

But turns out this is the game I needed to play tonight because if I played an actual good game, I would get no enjoyment out of it.

Primearch Interactive made Save Thine Kingdom. I don’t think I’ll be buying any more of their games.

Save yourselves the trouble. Skip this one.
