#EngenderedWriting 07 — Have you written / read "outed" stories? (E.g., The MC has masqueraded as a teenage boy for ages in a repressive society, but her sanitary pad overflows the plumbing in the restroom—what now?) Is this a genre or hackneyed? Share a link or a recommendation. [Written "Outed" Stories?]
The plumbing and sanitary pad example in the prompt is a summary of the first paragraphs of one of my novels. She runs to prevent being outed as a girl in a man's world, but being found out happens repeatedly in the story with her becoming both more outraged and more resilient each time, until she breaks the system... maybe? Not going to say. Read the book.
Outing. When a character is forced to live as who she isn't, or to pretend to be who she can't be forever to live the life she wants, makes for a good story. Being found out, living with the consequences is heartbreaking. It's my hope that showing readers how bad things happen to people you'd empathize with, they'll notice it in the real world. They'll realize maybe they can try harder, or they'll prevent such things from happening to others.
