Well I guess first there is the still unsolved murder of the woman. Then on top of that, there is the murder of the scientists.
I think the people involved in the mine are responsible for the murder of the woman and that cop who beats his kid helped cover it up.
Then you've got the missing scientist who was obviously pretty disturbed from a while back somehow getting his hands on the woman's missing tongue which would suggest he knows who killed her. He's also very much entrenched in the occult. So maybe he could've killed the other scientists as part of a cult ritual, but was spurred to do so by someone overseeing the mine.
I wouldn't be surprised if the missing scientist was dead too, just somewhere else, because he knew too much.
