OpenAI founder Sam Altman presents solution against fraud by AI deep fakes
...

With the ChatGPT inventor OpenAI, co-founder Sam Altman has opened the door to artificial intelligence that can imitate humans. With the identification project World, he now wants to ensure that real people can be distinguished from software copies online. People are supposed to create a profile – “World ID” – with an eye scan. You can only do this on the spherical scanners from World called Orb.

Among other things, World wants to tackle the problem of so-called deep fake videos, in which real-looking but fake recordings are generated by real people with the help of AI software. One of the big concerns currently is that fraudsters are trying to entice employees to money transfers in companies by staging a video switch with the alleged boss.

Detect fake videos thanks to scans

The solution of World, called “Deep Face”, is to match the videos with the recordings made when scanning the eyes. The company wants to offer its own camera interface on the users' devices, so that cooperation between the tech platforms will not be required.

The software will be compatible with much-used video apps such as WhatsApp, Zoom, Microsoft's teams of Apple's Facetime, World announced. However, the detection only works for people who have been captured at World.

Privacy concerns

World originally started as a project with crypto-currency elements under the name Worldcoin. The shorter name and a new version of the Orb scanners were presented at an event in San Francisco on Thursday.

In several countries there were privacy concerns against the original technical solutions of Worldcoin. The introduction in Spain was stopped after objections of the data protectionists. According to the World, about a third of the population were scanning their eyes in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. In Lisbon, every seventh population has a profile.

The company emphasizes that no data is stored on the orbs itself, but that they go directly to the devices of the users. World relies on blockchain technology, as used in digital currencies, for example. The records are split and the parts are stored in different places. The system should make this secure against data theft.

No replacement for identity documents

Altman stressed that the new era of artificial intelligence makes it particularly important to be able to determine that someone is actually a human being. The current infrastructure is not suitable for this. World also wants to cooperate with governments, said co-founder Alex Blania, who comes from Germany. He did not want to replace national identity documents, he assured. World also wants to offer governments the technology of the project for identification on the net, where only part of the ID data is needed. If there was a global protocol for this,
that is a great advantage, Blania said.

1000 times more Orbs

When presenting the more powerful orb model, World also emphasised that there will be 1000 times more devices needed for the growth plans. So far, there are locations where you can be scanned. In the future, it will also be possible in Latin America, among other things, to let an orb come home. The exact Orb business model remained unclear after the event.
