It uses the drying heat from an incandescent (not LED) light bulb to drive the invertebrates deeper into the litter and eventually all falling out the base into a vial. Usually entomologists have them drop into a preservative liquid where they die. If you sealed everything, I expect you could also use the setup to extract live invertebrates like amphipods.
