This is a traditional indonesian dessert called agar-agar gula jawa. Agar-agar is similar like jelly but it has a thicker consistency and more stiff than jelly that are made from gelatine. Agar-agar was made from seaweed so it is very healthy because it has a lot of fibers and vitamins that help your digestion system.
I grew up with this dessert so this dessert is something that quite personal with me. When I eat it, I could see myself again back home and as a child watching my mom cook this dessert.
Today I want to share you a recipe of this dessert. All ingredients can be found in a typical Asian market. It is very simple all you need are:
A. 1 pack of agar-agar powder (I used Satellit brand from Indonesia)
B. 150 g Palm sugar (choose the one with darker color)
C. 250 ml Coconut milk
D. 1 pandan leaf for flavor
E. 750 ml water
To make it:
1.Pour one pack of agar-agar powder and 750 ml of water in to a cooking pot
turn on the stove and heat the mixture
2. add palm sugar and stir it until it dissolve
3. add pandan leaf and keep stirring the solution until it boils
when the agar-agar solution has boiled, turn it off and add coconut milk and stir it again
4. transfer the mixture into a mold
5. let it cool for 1 hour and put them into the fridge for further cooling
enjoy!
That´s it!! now you can enjoy it while drinking your coffee or tea in the afternoon or eat it as is...
