There is something in intel CPU's called the management engine. Supposedly it's an operating system within the CPU called Minix. It supposed has a network stack and packets have been observed to be transmitted from. But as far as I can tell no one has ever proven that the management engine is doing anything malicious or that it has the ability to access memory or user data. So far only speculation. Do you think it's a good idea to flash you BIOS with open source firmware like Coreboot or Libreboot? You can potentially brick your device and their is no real evidence that it completely disables the management engine.
