The only place I've ever successfully grown poppies was in my front yard, which has very shallow, fine soil and barely any nutrients as I never feed that area or add any compost to it. It's sheltered from the wind, gets a decent amout of sun, and is only watered by the rain. They grew magnificently. The following year, we had them coming up in the cracks in the pavement all along the street (until the council did the annual spraying of the weedkiller), and these ones seemed even happier than the ones in my yard. My take-away from this is that you have to treat them mean!
