"summary",
"The Aerospace Information Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences used airborne ice radar to map the glaciers in the Qilian Mountains, part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which is the world's highest and a source of water for over 2 billion people. The technology, mounted on remote-sensing aircraft, emits electromagnetic waves that can penetrate thick layers of ice, providing information about the interior and bottom of the glacier. This is the first time the measurement of ice thickness of compound valley glaciers under complex terrain conditions has been achieved."
