One fundamental problem of how ActivityPub is implemented in practice is that it’s nearly impossible to see all the replies to a post. This means that even the subset of Reply Guys who would have looked at previous replies on other platforms before posting, don’t have that opportunity to do the right thing here.
This core fact has led me — already hyper conscious about trying not to be a Reply Guy — to more or less stop replying to anything unless I’m directly addressed, or know the OP well.
Maybe that’s fine! But it eats into the utility of Fedi as a place for dialogue. And leaves only the Reply Guys in reply threads, which makes the overall effect seem even worse.

quoting note1k40…sektAcross about ten things this week, I'll say this: mastodon has a real toxic reply guy culture going on and it is exhausting to receive this EVERY SINGLE TIME you dare say something that gets attention, as a marginalized female scientist. Worse to me tbh than typical trolling because it is so deeply rooted in credibility deficit "know your place" patterns. You all are worse than birdsite for me, where I have nearly five times more followers. Definitely thinking about leaving.
Fix your hearts.
