Lots of interesting DNS-based stuff you could do other than being an authoritative server, too. Unbound has loads of features that could fill a book, (especially its python module), DNS filtering/Pi Hole type stuff, dynamic DNS in various ways (self-hosted or from dozens of providers), DNS-based challenges for ACME/Let's Encrypt. Other interesting uses of TXT and SRV records and the like.
