it seems like the dominant paradigm is between neoliberalism ( in both sense of being psuedo progressive while promoting austerity and corporate handouts ) and right ring nationalism ( xenophobic, sociall conservativism, vague gestures at protectionism ) And so the neo-liberals in order to stay in power have to crush all left opposition ( Corbyn, Sanders) while keeping a certain level of working class support, and it turns out that this is a doomed strategy.
So let's take Brexit, it's framed at least as the elitist liberal post soviet technocratic order who imposed brutal austerity liquidating the post war social safety net and basically looting Spain Italy and especially greece, vs a vague right wing anti-immigrant populism, and we know how the story goes, it's more complicated than that but basically the pro brexit crowd had no future to offer because it was basically thatcherism light anyway
Trump v Clinton 2016 basically the same story, 2024 same shit, the liberals literally cut off the own legs in terms of the activist base because they are terrified of the working class and refuse to even offer them crumbs
sorry if i'm being overly anglo centric seems similar things happened all over Europe past decade or so
