the one thing I'm most excited about with the EU USB-C thing is the potential for the EU to mandate that all USB-C standards must be made freely available to the public, and the precedent it would set. the actual connector unification is a minor convenience by comparison.
(note: the core USB-C stuff is mostly open anyway, so I'm primarily referring to Alternate Mode extensions here)
