I think early articles that referred to Mastodon as a “Twitter alternative” may have been the original sin that got the media and the public off on the wrong foot. It suggested to the press and consumers that they were largely the same kinds of applications, when in fact, when fully understood, were similar, but quite different. So the public didn’t get it, and hated being chided for not seeing the vision.
