They grow naturally in a very specific stretch just east of the Mississippi River, mostly in moist, undisturbed soil of mature mixed hardwood forests. From seed, they take 7-10 years to start flowering.
If their flowering is disturbed or they are grazed or crushed, it can restart that cycle, starting over as a single-leaved plant for up to three years.
Their seeds are dispersed by ants, who collect and eat their coating and then leave them to germinate.
