501 years ago today, a Swedish army occupying Oslo, Norway, issued a proclamation to the population asking them to depose the joint Danish and Norwegian king and join a union with Sweden in stead. They were met with little enthusiasm.

Sweden, Norway and Denmark had been in a union since the 1380s, but in 1523, it was all unravelling. King Christian II had made himself unpopular everywhere and was facing rebellions both in Sweden and in Denmark.
