The difficulty adjustment algorithm in Bitcoin compares the timestamp of the first block of the 2016-block period (also known as the "difficulty period") to the timestamp of the last block of the same period. If the time between blocks is longer or shorter than 10 minutes per block (20160 minutes between the first and last block), the difficulty adjusts proportionately.
