I've ranted before how we need to expand the #Fediverse in order to replace the #fascism - promoting machine that is corporate social media (and maybe help save human civilization in the process), and currently, everyone joining, using, and promoting #Pixelfed seems like a great opportunity.
A lot of people didn't take kindly to #Zuckerberg kissing #Trump 's ring, and we have an opportunity to both hurt him and boost the Fediverse. While quite a few people are leaving #Facebook over this, this platform has had too many years making it indispensable for people maintaining connections with each other, and for them to extract themselves from this Moloch will take a lot of time and effort.
But #Instagram , a site that is less about maintaining connections with other people than about sharing cool pictures and short-lived trends, is far more vulnerable. Yes, there are some big-time "influencers" who will be loathe to move to a smaller platform. But of the 2 billion users or so that Instagram has, I'd wager that a lot of them don't have the same attachment to the platform that Facebook users have.
So let's do our part to make Pixelfed an alternative worth migrating to. It is fortunate that they released an official app recently, which gives the system some further news buzz. But what we really need is to make the platform come alive - which means registering, posting our cool pictures, and sharing those of others. Let's see how many Instagram users we can convince to follow.
This is also our opportunity to show that the Fediverse is more than just #Mastodon . Sure, Mastodon was the important pioneer that got the Fediverse its first global attention. But right now, Pixelfed gives us the opportunity that we are part of a large interconnected ecosystem free of corporate manipulation - so let's not waste this opportunity!
