A challenge of being self published is that most bookshops refuse to stock your books unless you work through a distributor. Which is understandable, they'd rather work with one business than hundreds of individual people.
But distributors are incredibly expensive - they demand that you print a big stock upfront, give them many copies for free (to use as samples) and they take a big % of the sales.
I'd actually end up losing money if I worked through a distributor , even if my books sold well. It would still be worth it for me as a kind of advertising, getting my books in bookshops is good visibility, but I can't afford it.
I wonder how many readers realise this.
