For god's sake, why doesn't anyone use TABS! This is exactly what they're for!
One tab for one indent, two tabs for two indents, etc. And you can customize the tab width without changing the document content.
And when you type a character before a tab, the tab shortens to keep the same indent level. So you can put comment characters before the tabs without pushing everything over.
