jeez, average U.S. home apparently runs on the equivalent of a constant 1100W[1]?? :O

Oh. Right. Most (~90% IIRC) houses in the U.S. have absolutely shitty insulation, and e.g. electric water heaters average something like 50W of constant power usage _when the tank is fully heated_ because of also shitty insulation, and jeez no wonder heat pumps are a big deal.
