last year i started an @umbrel node on my linux pc. the umbrel (npub1agh…mhct) software worked and i opened a channel and funded it. before the bitcoin blockchain downloaded, the computer crashed. i installed a new linux version and restarted. after the restart i installed umbrel again, signed in with the mnemonic keys but unfortunately the funded channel was not there any more. i went to the funding source and executed a closing of the channel to the wallet. i contacted umbrel support and was told that it could take up to 2 weeks to receive the money back to the wallet. now it is almost a year and the money is still not back. i can track it in multiple wallets, i have even the btc address of the funds. the funds did not move anywhere. they are still stuck in the channel where i sent them.
i have asked @umbrel to provide step by step instructions how to get my funds back. it is only a very small amount - less than 250.000 satoshi - but i found it disturbing that @umbrel unfriended me and did not even respond.
i can prove that i own the funds. i have all logs from the source, tx id, channel id, channel onion address, i just do not have the keys due to their weird system. you do not hold your keys of your wallet with umbrel. i asked support a year ago where my funds were and who had them. they told me that no one held them.
i would not recommend umbrel to anyone. i know that there are a lot of people using umbrel and they have no issues but also a lot of people have similar issues and they do not get resolved.
citadel has also a solution for hosting lightning channels and there are videos showing how you can host even without any of them.
umbrel is free but they do not provide any support
