Ribblehead Viaduct
The Ribblehead or Batty Moss Viaduct was completed in 1874 by a workforce of 2300 men, 100 of whom lost their lives by a combination of accidents, smallpox and fights. They lived with their families in shanty towns near the base of the structure. The viaduct carries the rail lines for the Settle to Carlisle railway in Yorkshire across the Batty Moss Valley in Northern England. It is 400 metres long and 32 metres high.
When I took this image, the temperature was just 3 degrees Celsius and a bitingly cold wind made the actual temperature -3 degrees! I struggled for some time to find a composition as I wanted something in the foreground to add depth to the image. The rocks I feel provide that depth and also help to balance the image. The image itself is a blend of 5 images because of the difference in exposure between the sky and the land.
