Many people are afraid of AI.

Not because they’re afraid AI will take over the world like in the movies.

But because they’re afraid AI will make them lose their jobs.

So, they try to ask the government to help them stop AI’s development.

Should the government agree to their request?

I don’t think so.

While it’s true that they might lose their jobs because of AI, they won’t be unemployed for long.

Since AI will increase society’s productivity, it’s going to create new and better jobs.

Better than their old jobs.

They can then work in these new and better jobs.

In some sense, AI is just like cars in the old days.

Back then, we traveled with horse carriages.

One day, we invented something called cars, which had the potential to totally replace horse carriages, make carriage drivers lose their jobs.

Should the government ‘protect’ carriage drivers by stopping the development of cars?

Of course not!

While it was true that a lot of carriage drivers lost their jobs, cars made travelling faster, more comfortable, and cleaner (back then, the streets were littered with horse droppings, unlike the streets we see in the movies).

And many ex-carriage drivers later became taxi drivers.

This is one reason why we shouldn’t get in the way of AI’s development, even if it results in people losing their jobs for a certain period of time.
