But that seems to manifest itself as a problem with retaining patches (factory and/or user, depends exactly which chips are to blame).

but i dont even think that's your problem because you're saying all the buttons are non-responsive... are you sure there isn't a ribbon cable between the face and the board that is loose?
i dont have a S4, but i do have a quadraverb gt thats collecting dust. doesnt demand enough on the used market for me to bother selling it, but its all yours if shipping isn't too much :)
