#Chickens are fantastic. Lots of fun to watch and easy to care for. We currently have a small flock and plan to triple it this Spring.

First thing to realize is that there are “laying” breeds, there are “broilers” IE “meat birds,” and there are hybrids that are sort of in between, and useful for both meat and eggs. Don’t buy meat birds expecting a lot of egg production. Research breeds and know exactly what you’re buying.

Second thing is that young chicks need a brood lamp. Not optional.

If you’re in the US, suggest going to your nearest Tractor Supply store. Lots of great resources and books there, and that’s where we buy our feed and our coop when we first got started. On that subject, best advice is to invest in (or build, if you’re handy) a *quality* coop. Different sizes and types of construction are available at Tractor Supply and even on Amazon. Don’t go too cheap on this as a good one can last you years, but a bad one will annoy you every day.

To your actual question of guides, suggest researching online to get started, as that will take you very far. Anything written by Justin Rhodes or Joel Salatin would be great. There’s a ton of great info on YouTube on the subject as well.
