Even Liz Kendall is making acceptable noises about her plans for Job Centres. I'm surprised. Might not amount to significant change, but then again it might.
I don't think I've been in a job centre since I took a few months to find my first job as a graduate after Uni. Back then it wasn't about jumping through meaningless and punitive hoops with the threat of homelessness or starvation hanging over you. I think they wanted to see that I was actually trying to get a job at one point, but the file I kept of application letters satisfied them.
Ive seen a few videos of people - usually auditors to be honest - going into job centres and looking for job info, and being treated as if they're terrorist threats because they're taking pictures of the job signs on the boards. The conclusion is obvious, job centres are not for people seeking work. They're there to punish the poor.
Hope that changes.
