Missouri families are now eligible for support from the Southern Trans Youth Emergency Project, including grant funding and patient navigation services.
MISSOURI – Families of transgender youth in Missouri are grappling with the implementation of SB49, a needlessly cruel anti-transgender law that prohibits healthcare professionals in Missouri from providing medically necessary healthcare for trans adolescents for the treatment of gender dysphoria. This means that care such as gender-affirming hormone therapy and puberty blockers are inaccessible for most trans people until they turn 18.
In response, advocates announced the launch of a new emergency program to provide direct support and resources to families of transgender youth to ensure their access to continued care. Families of transgender youth in Missouri are now eligible to apply for support from the Southern Trans Youth Emergency Project (STYEP), a regional project of the Campaign for Southern Equality, led in partnership in Missouri with PROMO, The GLO Center, and TransParent’s Missouri chapters. The project helps transgender youth whose access to gender-affirming care has been disrupted by government policies. Through STYEP, families can receive accurate information about SB49; patient navigation to identify out-of-state gender-affirming care providers; and emergency grants of $500 for immediate needs, including travel, medication, and other logistics.
