Vilhjalmur Stefansson, an Canadian Arctic explorer was born #OTD in 1879.
He organized and directed the Canadian Arctic Expedition, 1913–1916 to explore the regions west of Parry Archipelago for the Government of Canada. 3 ships, the Karluk, the Mary Sachs, and the Alaska were employed. He left the main ship, the Karluk, when it became marooned in the ice in Aug./Sept. 1913. His books include, My Life with the Eskimo, The Friendly Arctic, Unsolved Mysteries of the Arctic, & Discovery.
