It should re-align them on October 15, at which time Earth should begin receiving data once again (18 hours after the re-alignment, since it is 12 billion miles away).

If it doesn't work then, perhaps we won't get it back, but Voyager 1 is still transmitting from more than 14 billion miles out there.
