Not how I wanted to spend my afternoon, but it turned out. My bike fell when the kids got out of the trailer and the front friction shifter broke off. I didn't have any other friction shifters so I had to change the entire system to index. I found combo brake/shifters, so all four front and back shifters and brake levers needed to be changed with new cables. I found some shorter grips too, so they no longer extend past the bars. Everything works great, and I can neatly run through all the gears.
