"I'm sorry."
At this point in my life, I'm approaching a quarter million I'm sorry's.
It's a guess. I'm sorry I can't be more accurate.
May seem silly to some to apologize for dang near everything. Heck, some people never ever say I'm sorry!
I'm sorry they don't. Makes life with them really difficult.
You see, of all the reasons people over-apologize, I've needed to confront all of them it seems.
Sorry I'm not a more perfect coach. I try. (wink)
I've certainly come to know... my apologies have mattered to me. I've wanted to fit in. I want people to know I care... even if it's not really my fault I'm 37 seconds late to our appointment because of a fire.
I've said I'm sorry, to myself and God, just this week, for wars I have nothing to do with.
I've apologized to to people triggered by my healthy boundaries. I've said I'm sorry for "getting in someone's way" — when I was legit there first.
And I do say, "I'm sorry" to myself for taking responsibilities for other people's feelings, fears, and even their judgments.
I'm not fully healed on this front. I even find myself wanting to apologize that this email isn't as clear and concise as I'd like it to be!
What I do not apologize for is that it matters to me that empathetic, caring people continue to learn the skill of when to apologize... when to explain... and when to assert what matters with calm confidence.
...and that we do not take responsibility and apologize anymore when it isn't actually our fault.
Cathy and I will be hosting a real skills workshop where we, as re-calibrating over-apologists explore the why's and strengthen our shared resolve to be clear about what benefits from a sincere apology... and what is not.
Especially what causes us to feel weak and insecure and like we're failing at keeping everyone "happy."
We hope you'll join us, and provide financial support... and if you don't or can't... no apology necessary. Thanks for taking care of yourself. Everyone gets the recording who signs up.
