I just realized this week how novels introduced new foods to me, as well as new places and ideas.
I'm reading Mary Russell's The Sparrow at the moment and part.of.it.is set in Puerto Rico. But I didn't really clock this setting (bad at geography) until I read about a dish a character was eating and decided to make beans in soffrito for dinner.
It was delicious of course, but more interesting was the additional (albeit removed) context and sense of the novels setting.
Go eat your novels.
