I was just listening to a long lecture series on ancient mythology and the professor—often saying why we couldn’t know what something actually meant because there was no explanation to go with an artifact—gave contemporary examples of meanings we all understand but would baffle future archaeologists who had no explanation of them. Like Santa Claus in his flying sleigh or McDonalds arches that look like shapes in gothic cathedrals. We worship there but not that way haha.
