So whenever a user wants to do a mgt operation on a record like change or delete, the server generates a nonce and expects the client to sign it with the secret key that belongs to the pubkey stored in the record indexed by the id.
it is also important to mention, that the account key is in no way used to "encrypt" any of the passwords in or out of sphinx. the account key is only used for addressing records and establishing authorization of mgt ops.
