If I don't apply, I won't get it: my approach to interesting 'bits on the side'

Meanderings about my approach to voluntary / side roles, on the back of a rejection yesterday.

tl;dr: if it appeals to me, and I've better-than-50% chance of making it through the first sift, I apply. If I don't get it, oh well...
