There’s a lot of advertising out there for VPNs and Private Browsers that will protect your privacy on the internet. Unfortunately, most of them are misleading, because protecting your privacy online is mostly a matter of figuring out *who are you trying to avoid being tracked by?*
Avoiding having a browsing history on your local device? Use a private tab/browser that doesn’t retain a local history.
Avoiding having your ISP know what sites you visit? Use a custom DNS server or VPN. (Though be aware that the entity operating the DNS or VPN may track your activity instead.)
Avoiding being tracked by your search engine? Use Duckduckgo or Ecosia or similar.
Avoiding being tracked by advertisers as you surf around? Use an adblocker or cookie blocker or similar.
Unfortunately, using all of those in combination with one another will make for a pretty bad browsing experience… but it’ll be private!
