I am not aware that any book exists on the subject I will search for it but if I could recommend a method I would most certainly recommend composting with worms.
You can set up a worm bin that is very light and where volumes do not need to be important. You can keep that bin indoors, it does not smell or does not attract bugs if it is well-tended. You do not need a lot of tools. And most importantly composting worms process so much waste that even with small containers you can process a fair amount of compost.
