Americans, I am so, so sorry for your loss.
As a German, I must ask myself: Where do we go from here?
How can we support the Americans who are still trying to fight such overwhelming evil - and those who will suffer the most from it?
And how do we proceed in Europe? Of the Great Powers that remain, the European Union is the only one who has still a firm committment to democracy, and we need to nurture and strengthen this. Yet this comittment seems more fragile than ever. Here in Germany, our chancellor Olaf Scholz is a spineless coward who would have paid little more to lip service to aiding Ukraine without Biden twisting his arm. He has already congratulated Trump (on X, no less), and now he will likely push for a "settled peace". Friedrich Merz, the man most likely to succeed him, is a Blackrock veteran and will do whatever the billionaires of this world want - and as we have seen, they are _just fine_ with fascism. He might even ally with the German fascists of the AfD outright - he has certainly aped a lot of their rhetoric. He has also congratulated Trump (also on X), and called the USA "the most important ally of Germany outside of Europe".
While the German fascists are not yet close to leadership of the country, they are certainly making inroads. Elsewhere in the European Union the situation is worse - they are running things in Hungary and Italy, although they fortunately lost power in Poland. I do not expect too much of the leadership of the European Union, either - Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, is well connected with the rich and powerful and the remnants of the former aristocracy. She is unlikely to betray class interests, and has "warmly" congratulated Trump (also on X).
So what can we do to strengthen Europe so that it can weather the coming storm?
