Freelance life sometimes has weird boundaries between work and friendship.
Most of my friends are people I've worked with at some stage in my career. Not everyone you work with is going to be someone you can call your friend though. I won't continue working with anyone who has proved themselves unworthy of friendship.
I carry the same ethics into personal and work relationships. The same compassion as well. I think most people do, if they look honestly at themselves.
